I also know the impact that micro-blogging can have on your personal brand.

I have multiple Twitter accounts:

My 1st one was set up to just mess around with and learn the in's and out's of Twitter
2nd one was more for personal branding and professional use which is @THEMichaelCain
3rd is for a small community of folks a couple hundred miles away that I like to stay connected with.

Using multiple Twitter accounts help me "feel" like I am not going to have my personal and professional worlds collide. This is important to me because I work in a very conservative industry and yet my friends aren’t all conservative.

As I put my Twitter Strategy “Twittegy” together I began to see some connections between Twitter and the Old Skool CB radio ....The mind works in mysterious ways.

I was a raised with the 70’s & 80’s having an influence on me……and in the 70's and 80's the CB radio was "HAWT" and my grandparents had CB's and CB handles (Grandma was known as “Copy Cat” and Grandpa was “Blue-eyed Gypsy”) Grandpa lived in Columbus Ohio but commuted to Indianapolis weekly for work…for 20+ years!…so he was always traveling like a Gypsy. Grandma got her name…..well…who knows. They were pretty trendy for their age though! They used to take me to the CB Jamboree’s on weekends and wore name tags with their CB “Handles” so if you ran into "CB friends" they could put faces with Handles if they were all at the Jamboree’s.

It was like this underground club (Not like a RAVE club or anything, more like a country bar)…which reminds me of Twitter right now…not everyone uses it, but has at least heard of Twitter. I’ve had conversations with @HiimAllan on Twitter and really only know he lives somewhere around me. I’ve had conversations with @StaceyH007 about THE Ohio State University and Ohio University, yet never met either of them in person.

So here are 5 reasons that Twitter is the new CB Radio (in my warped mind)

Seems that I have seen or read more articles recently about the ways “creative” organizations are going about building pipelines of candidates for roles they ANTICIPATE needs for.

One article for instance talks about how PNC Bank has placed an HR person in each region and titles them a “Talent Scout ”. Their job is to always be networking and going to events where bankers would be. This Talent Scout then meets these people in a casual environment and starts to build a relationship and slowly builds rapport and a relationship with them. Meets them for lunch, coffee and just gets to know them over a period of time.

While I don’t think this is a bad practice at all, I do know this is NOT A NEW CONCEPT!

I’d call this person the Social Butterfly…We knew them in High School as social butterflies and when they walked into a party they talked to everyone…..In College, we called them Rush Chairman, as adults we call them kickass recruiters.

Any good/natural recruiter has been doing this from day 1in their recruiting role….and here’s the real kicker, if you have the right organizational culture…this is NOT JUST HR doing this. In fact, it’s an expectation of every leader in the organization to be meeting talent and building rapport.

Having a culture that expects each leader to know their competition by name is a great deal more powerful than making it one persons job.

Let’s face it……As a recruiter myself, I would like to think I am better at relationship building and better at finding potential candidates than any hiring manager, right??? In reality the hiring manger is who this person would potentially work for, not me….and people know what I want…it’s obvious…I get paid to find and hire people so being in HR we are not being sly by just doing coffee….smart people know why we are buying them coffee and it’s not because I need a friend…..I have 400 best friends on Facebook.

I’m not knocking this, I’m just saying it’s not a new idea or concept and the real power is to build a culture of leaders to do this, NOT specific jobs to do it. Set goals, track them and reward the behaviors!

I guess if you don’t have this culture maybe this is where you start……I’m lucky enough to work for an organization that this is an expectation of all leaders and I’m lucky enough to be in a organization where I can say to my hiring managers…..”Who have you met, where is your pipeline of candidates?” and not have the manager be offended and reply “It’s not my job, it’s yours!”

It’s a great place to work as a recruiter…….Social Butterflies, Rush Chairman and Talent Scouts should apply. J

Lab Rat - Part 2....NO....It's "I'M A SPY"...Future Blog.

I'm changing the title.....I wasn't a Lab Rat.....I was A SPY!

The answer is NO. I work hard, long hours and I deserve it....so judge me if you want, but I don’t care.

I really can’t stand still for more than about 10 minutes so I wasn’t sure if I’d really wait 45 minutes or more for this hyped up iPad.

Bonds began to form and even contact information exchanged by many....definitely a “cult-like” ..ok a “special club”, not a cult environment. Then out of nowhere the Apple folks wander around in the mall and begin talking to the people in line...at this point there were probably about 100+ in line. Then, the mall coffee store Tazza Mia starts at the beginning of the line with a cart stocked with bottled water, Carafes of fresh coffee and cookies and is giving the APPLE GEEKS waiting in line treats! First, I thought they were selling them, but nope...giving them away...or APPLE paid for it.....either way everyone in line was quite impressed with the small token appreciation/service.

Still.....Its been a long time since anyone, let alone a big, bad company took the time to provide service like that. OK, now its my turn to enter the store and it’s only 5:10pm....The APPLE Genius greeted me with a smile (likely thinking...SUCKER!), but it he seemed genuine and asked me how I intended to use the iPad to ensure I got the right one, didn’t pressure sell and add-on accessories.

Customer service is too often overlooked these days as a deciding factor for winning and keeping loyal customers. Not only is it important to me -- it's my primary driver for many of my decisions. My family even plays a guessing game when I run into a store or restaurant for a quick purchase -- "Will dad be happy with the service today?"

My oldest daughter has started to notice that when I'm a customer I try to give good service to the employees. I'm overly friendly, I use their name, etc. Our service industry has declined too far. I may not be able to change the entire industry but by gosh, I'm going to try and change one person at a time. I want superior service and I'm giving my business to those who can provide it.

I'm a Lab Rat in this experiment.....

.......I have been working on a fun experiment since early March, 2010.

Time and time again, I hear the same reply – “I’ve met with staffing firms before and never heard from anyone again..” This is a common misunderstanding with candidates that should be nipped in the bud! Staffing firms sometimes represent themselves as working FOR YOU. This is NOT the case!

Candidates working with staffing firms have to understand, staffing is a commissioned business that is paid by the client. Client companies engage searches with firms to find them EXACTLY what they’re looking for. Meeting with candidates is a part of that process. If you’re not a “fit” for the specific position you were called for, in all honesty, you will NOT hear from that firm again until they have a position that IS a fit for you.

If you are a candidate that would like the undivided attention of a professional recruiter then my advice to you is to engage with one that will be working on YOUR behalf, not the client company. This will of course cost you. If you’re willing to pay a headhunting fee, you will have a professional designating their time and resources to your specific job search.

So, when working with a firm keep in mind, while they would love to help you find your next career move, they HAVE to stay focused on who is paying their commissions – and that is the client company they are representing!! Don’t get discouraged when you don’t hear back, you’re in their database. And, if/when they do have a client company engage in a search with them that IS a fit for you, they’ll be knocking your door down. Be patient and work with people you trust – You as a candidate are a very valuable commodity, make sure you’re treated as such and expectations are set for all involved!

Corporate "Buzz Words" - What one's are you tired of hearing?

Corporate Buzz Words and Jargon that I think I'm tired of hearing.......(random order)

10) Value-add

9) Branded

8) Think outside of the box

7) Stretch goal

6) ...at the end of the day

5) Standard Operating Procedure

4) Passion

3) Challenge the process, respectfully....aka - try to make improvements without being an A$$.

2) Big Picture

1) Strategy

Here's a thought....why don't you just show up and do your job....don't speak to just hear yourself talk in meetings!

Make your job/career fun.....I personally think when you wake up each day YOU decide what kind of day you will have at work! Every time I watch this show I see the similarities between what Patti does and what I do for a living.

My Job:

As a Executive Recruiter, I get to meet with hiring managers and listen to what they want (expect me to find) in an employee....they are my millionaires/millionairesses.

Patti's Job:

Patti's millionaires/client pay her to find them that special someone.

The difference is when one of Patti's clients irritate her she tells them to get out, go away and drops them as a client......well, I don't have that option...I have to keep my hiring managers until I find them a match....because they can have multiple employee's...so essentially the get to date several people at the same time and they often get divorced several times. By "divorced" I mean that my hiring managers can terminate an employee or the employee can resign....I get residual business!

When Patti was interviewed about her success she says her grandmother always told her to date in 3's....in her words "A Pair and a Spare". She means that dating 3 people at the same time you are always figuring out which person may be right.

Funny....I do the same thing. My plan is to never present just one candidate to my millionaires (hiring managers) either. I always try to find three quality candidates for the jobs I am filling and then I take it one step further. I do not present my best candidate to the hiring manager first.....I usually save them for the 3rd and final candidate.

I also love it that Patti says that "My Picker was broke" in this clip (clip is about half way down the page). She tells stories about how she was picking the wrong guys for herself when she was single so she asked one of her staff members to do the "picking" for her....and ironically she is now engaged to that guy.

In recruiting, one of our success measurements isn't "getting married" rather its how long it takes to find our hiring managers that perfect candidate for their job opening....better known in the recruiting world as "days to fill". At my employer our scorecard has 3 major areas that measure my success as a recruiter:

1) COST

2) QUALITY

3) DELIVERY

This is not in order of importance and our clients tell us the order of importance is actually:

1) QUALITY

2) DELIVERY and then last is

3) COST.

So basically they are telling me...."I would rather find the QUALITY or "right" person" than find just "someone" DELIVERED quickly and lastly they are worried about saving money.

Patti is 48 and engaged, but not married......sounds like her "days to fill" is a bit slow. Sounds like another similarity between Patti and me.....Quality should always be first!

Hey Patti....if you need to hire a new staff member.....call me...My Picker works fine!

Don't you hate it when............

So Social Media is a way of life and how more and more of us are communicating each day....so why do we each have those friends that STILL don't even have a basic Facebook profile??!!!

I understand that most people may not get into Twitter, MySpace and other Social Media outlets, but 300 Million people are on FB....it's not a trend.

Let me tell you about a friend of mine....uh, let's call him "Dave"...why Dave? Well, because that's what his parents named him.

Dave is a graduate of THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY with a degree in what?......Journalism! How does a Journalism guy not get into communications and media? Dave says "I don't have time and as soon as I learn it something new will be out and I don't want to have to keep up with the latest Facebook" - REALLY Dave!

I sent Dave a text message the other morning (02/14/10) to just say "Hey". Dave promptly responded via a text back to me letting me know it was early where he was at (He was in Reno, Nevada) for a TV production. Reno is 3 hours behind Cincinnati.....luckily Dave was already awake though. See, Dave is a Producer for a Sporting Event (I'll leave details out to protect Dave). That's right...Dave produces TV events for sports and travels quite a bit. Wouldn't FB be great for a guy like him who is always traveling? Apparently not.

I talked to him about 6 months ago and told him he needs to get on LinkedIn and build a profile. I told him how it would become viral and it really could help him keep track of people and phone numbers he needs for business. Hey Dave - Lose the old Rolodex!

I also told him that putting his profile of experience out there may get him discovered by guys like me....RECRUITERS! Recruiters love LinkedIn. We use it all the time to find qualified people, e-mail them or call them and pitch great career opportunities. My father (Gary) is a retired Union guy, superb stainless steel and aluminum fabricator. My mother (Susan) is a home maker. My father built the house we grew up in and I was lucky enough to never move as a child. My neighborhood was SMALL and had 22 houses. The neighborhood was a one lane road with no curbs and no fire hydrants....I call it rural....some may refer to it as Redneck. I still occasionally get to chat with my neighborhood friends....mostly thanks to Facebook. With 22 homes and surrounded by farmland/crops there wasn't a great deal to do...so the neighborhood kids were close.

Each year I saw the seasons change through corn or soybeans growing in the fields across the street as well as in the fields behind the house. Best thing about it was we had LOTS of room to ride motorcycles, go carts and anything with an engine.

All GROWN UP?..........HARDLY!

I went to High School at Groveport Madison School and college at The Ohio State University and Franklin University.

Mom made me fill out a job application when I was 16 years old (1987) for a job at Warehouse Club (like a Costco) and was hired as a "Caller" for $4.50/hour and time and a half on Sundays! I worked there while going to school and stayed with the company 8 years holding several roles and working my way into management until the company ultimately went bankrupt.

After Warehouse club closed its doors in 1995 I was offered a role with a Recruitment Process Outsourcing organization known as Seaton Corporation headquartered in Chicago, but my client was located in Columbus. I was hired as one of two account managers after going through what seemed like 65 rounds of DDI behavioral based interviews. I was responsible for outsourcing all of the supplemental hiring practices for the SEARS Distribution center on the Westside of Columbus....this is where I throw up the "W" hand gesture and yell "Westside!" I learned a great deal and worked more than I learned. After staying there a couple of years and working 70+ hours a week I banked some money...really only because I worked too much and never had time to spend it! I realized working from 6:00am until 11:30pm regularly was not how I wanted to live.

I left Seaton/Sears and went to work at CBS Personnel as an account manager where I was tasked with finding people to work for my clients. Some of my clients included: Victoria Secrets, Bath and Body Works, T. Marzetti and TS Tech. I liked the job and was promoted quickly to run an Office in Grove City, Ohio.

I stayed there until I got a call from a headhunter pitching a job as a recruiter role for a "local Bank". I was happy where I was so I politely said....."No Thanks, I don't think I'm the person you want for that role, I'm not really a downtown or a suit kinda guy". The headhunter/recruiter was persistent and called me again the next day and said..."why don't you just talk to them and learn about them and the role?" I agreed and made a trip to Fifth Third Bank and met the Senior Vice President of the Retail Division of the Bank. Things went well, but I felt really out of place with all the Navy Blue suits walking around and all the huge formal offices....this sure wasn't no place for a guy like me! They offered me a job and I said, "I would need a clothing allowance along with a salary, since I don't even have a suit." ......No, they didn't give me a clothing allowance, but they increased the offer and said this will help me buy some suits. So I took the Bank recruiter job in August 1997.

I worked in the Columbus Bank for about 7 years and was part of several Bank acquisitions. The Bank headquarters are located in Cincinnati, Ohio so I met several great folks from our Cincinnati Office....including one person that what would one day become my wife. I moved to Loveland, Ohio a small suburb north of Cincy in 2003 where i still live today.

MARRIAGE and KIDS..........(Jeanee, Tall, Grande and Venti)

I proposed to my co-worker (Jeanee) in Chicago and we married (March 16, 2005) about a year later on the beaches of Aruba. We have 3 great daughters (Jillian, Ava and Madelyn) who I lovingly refer to Starbucks coffee sizes (Tall, Grande` & Venti). I'll probably have to include more about "Marriage and Kids" in future blogs.

CURRENT STATUS..........

I still work at Fifth Third Bank in Downtown Cincinnati and manage our hiring practices for all of the Banks National Lines of Business. I am one of the lucky people that loves what they do......I get to chase Bankers with Ego's and tell them how great they are and why they should work at Fifth Third.

I have a great wife and 3 great daughters.....with four ladies at home and a job that is relentless I don't have a great deal of free time.

I refer to my house as the Cain Sorority House....."Kappa Kappa Cain".
